Brand & Identity
Brand Strategy
The positioning, audience and message work that has to happen before any design does.
Everyone describes the business differently
Sales says one thing on a call, the website says another, and the founder says a third in interviews. Without an agreed position, every new piece of marketing starts from scratch and pulls in a slightly different direction.
One agreed position, written down
We work out who you are actually for, what you do better than the alternatives, and how to say it in language a buyer uses. That becomes a written strategy your design, content and sales work can all be built from.
What you get
- Audience & segment definition
- Competitive positioning map
- Value proposition & proof points
- Messaging framework
- Tone of voice guide
- Naming guidance where needed
How it works
- InterviewsWe speak to the founders, the sales team and, where possible, recent customers. Customers usually describe the value in clearer words than the company does, and those words go straight into the messaging.
- Market reviewWe look at how the competitors a buyer genuinely shortlists position themselves, so the space you claim is one that is actually open rather than crowded.
- Positioning workshopA working session where options are put on the table and narrowed to one. Decisions are made in the room rather than circulated for comment afterwards.
- DocumentationThe agreed position is written up as a messaging framework and tone of voice guide, with example copy so it is obvious how to apply it.
Common questions
How is this different from branding?
Strategy decides what you are saying and to whom. Branding is the visual system that carries it. Strategy can be done on its own, but design work without it tends to be decided on taste rather than on what the business needs.
Do you need access to our customers?
It makes the work considerably better. Four or five short conversations with recent customers usually surface the language that ends up in your headlines. If access is not possible we work from sales calls, reviews and support records instead.
What do we actually receive?
A written strategy document covering audience, positioning, value proposition, messaging framework and tone of voice, with example copy for each. It is written to be handed to a designer, a writer or an agency and used directly.
How long does it take?
Typically three to five weeks, depending on how quickly interviews can be scheduled. The workshop and write-up are quick; arranging conversations with busy customers is usually the longest part.
